Baguio: Blooming Odyssey of Summer

When Summer starts to fill the air, I always feel longing to travel someplace as they say Summer is the best time to travel. As the heat of weather comes with the season, some feel like going to cooler places where there is enough warm to console one’s adventurous spirit. This is just what I feel when I think of spending my first trip of Summer this year. And what could be any ideal place to spend my Summer than to spend it to the “Summer Capital” of the country – Baguio! It’s the place to be when it’s Summer as Baguio will always be not just a perfect place for a cool weather and relaxation but enough for exploring new things while enriching oneself’s thirst for adventure.

City of Pines in Tam-awan Village's viewpoint.
Arriving early in the morning in the City of Pines, the cool weather yearns for a long sleep but if you’re hungry, it’s interesting to try food and exotic cuisines at Balajadia's Kitchenette (Slaughter House Compound, Balajadia St., Barangay Sto. Nino, 2600 Baguio City) in Slaughter House Compound. Slaughter House is a cluster of restaurant that serves home-style cooked and roasted cuisines that are mostly meat. One of the exotic cuisine that I tried is Papaitan (Goat Bile Stew) but I highly recommend their Bulalo (Beef shank and bone marrow soup) which is a perfect comfort food for the cool weather of Baguio.

Baguio, here I come!
Sunrise welcoming me as I arrived at the borders of Baguio...
My summer visit to Baguio is just timely for the Panagbenga Festival period which runs from late February up to early March. This is a period of time in the city where most of the flowers are in full bloom, hence the celebration of the festival. Although, I did not arrive during the main parade event of the flowers, I enjoyed the blooming sceneries of Baguio flowers. It is no wonder that visitors and tourists flocks the city during this period. It’s not just about the cool temperature of the weather but also because the surroundings of the city are enticing to roam and stroll at with the lovely blooms of the flowers in every corner. I enjoyed walking around the streets with these beautiful sceneries of Baguio especially at morning time.

Bulalo for a cool weather.
Late but sumptuous lunch at Balajadia's Kitchenette.
Located in Pinsao Proper, is the art and cultural venue named Tam-awan Village. “Tam-awan” means vantage point in local dialect because of its location where scenic views of La Union and Baguio can be seen in its view decks. What you’ll see in the village are Ifugao huts and Kalinga houses made of original materials and lay out in the village resembling the design of a traditional Cordillera Village. Some of these houses and huts can also be rented for an overnight accommodation stay too. You can also trek inside the village trails to see its scenic view decks and other indigenous houses which I did with my travel mates. I enjoyed and amused by the sceneries of pine trees amidst at times covered by a thick haze of mist. The place is also a showcase of indigenous craftsmanship especially of Ifugao people where there are art galleries and craft shop for its appreciation. Tam-awan Village also provides art workshops for drawing, painting and solar drawing in keeping its tradition of promoting, sustain and preserve art particularly of Cordillera. My visit to Tam-awan Village made me appreciate Cordillera life, culture and history.

Panagbenga Festival in Tam-awan Village!
By afternoon, it is an ideal time to stroll around Session Road - the main thoroughfare of Baguio City and is the main hub of what is called the Baguio Central Business District. It is located in the city center that’s why it is also the center of Panagbenga Festival activities where lots of locals and visitors flock through. It is divided into two parts - Lower and Upper Session Road.

Comfort food at Oh My Gulay! - Hot chocolate at Mango Crepe.
The art space and chic Oh My Gulay! interiors.
Along Session Road, there is an interesting café and restaurant because of its artistic touches and designs that is worth spending an afternoon with is interestingly named Oh My Gulay! (Rooftop floor, La Azotea Building, Session Road, Baguio). The restaurant with its name mainly serves vegetarian dishes but it happens to be a big space of art galleries showcase as well! Every corner of the place has aesthetically considered art. Once you pass the cave-like entrance, you’ll be greeted with a fish pond, a theatre stage and a large wooden boat with various art pieces of sculptures and paintings. After I took a sip of their hot chocolate and munch on their sweet mango crepe with ice cream, I took time to explore the art galleries of Oh My Gulay. There’s a room space of paintings and indigenous sculptures which I try to mimic. Even their restroom amused me with its colorful laid out of crystal-like tiles designed in its walls. A visit to Oh My Gulay is not just for satisfying my tummy but also pleasing sensors for art appreciation.

Early evening I visited one of the famous park in the city, Burnham Park. Even though its evening, visitors still flocks the park for an evening stroll and tries to do paddling in its man-made lake. What made my night time visit to Burnham Park dramatic and memorable was the full lit of the surrounding lights with the full moon light on the sky reflects on the lake water. It was a perfect night time shot of Burnham Park though I still wishes to see this park in the morning. My visit to the park marks my return here after 15 years since my first visit on Burnham Park way back in 1997. Isn’t it a feat?

Night time at Burnham Park.
Hungry for dinner? Then, it’s not a problem when you’re looking big dinner servings at Glenn 50’s Diner (92 Upper General Luna Road, Corner Brent Road, Baguio City). I had their Guys on the Hood servings which compose of spaghetti pasta, fried chicken, pizza, slice pork chop with fries and garlic bread. What a meal! I highly recommend it! The meal has big servings that satisfied my hungry stomach. All other meals too in Glenn 50’s Diner had big servings too like The Famous 50’s Burger which my friend tried. No wonder it’s always crowded with patrons and visitors especially at dinner time. We had a hard time finding seat space before we finally settled for our dinner. Inside the restaurant, it has a 50’s look – it has jukebox, posters of celebrities who dominated the decade, and of course, 50s music all day and night.

Guys on the Hood serving at Glenn 50's dinner and Penetration Point at Concoctions Bar and Resto.
Night life is definitely one of the hit activities that shouldn’t be miss when in Baguio. So right after dinner we went to Concoctions Bar and Resto (Upper General Luna Road Extension, Baguio) to sample Baguio’s night life, bar lounging and have a good drink, of course! What I like about in Concoctions Bar and Resto is that they small stage for live music performances of their bands where guests with singings talents can also perform if they want to. The music that night was relaxing bossa nova tunes from two female singer of the band who did stir the crowd with their beautiful and sultry voices.  Our drinks started with a glass pail of hard liquor called Penetration Point – true to its name, it seems to have penetrating effect! My musically gifted colleagues then volunteered to perform on stage when the band invited anyone in the audience to sing. Singing Howie Day’s Collide, my colleagues delighted the whole crowd. I enjoyed our night in Baguio and finished off with a few more beer until we get drunk but still manage to get home to Hotel 45 (Bagong Bayan St., Brgy. Salud Mitra, Baguio City).

A trip to the “City of Pines” is not complete without visiting Baguio’s fame Mines View Park. The park has always been a popular tourist attraction where tourists can shop, explore and view the scenery. An abandoned mine, used by early Ibaloi/Igorot peoples, is viewed from the viewing deck of the park. The park is also popular for shopping souvenir items from Baguio as there are numerous stalls of souvenir shop in and out around the park. One of the best activities in Mines View Park is to snack on the uniquely sweet Strawberry Taho – a strawberry syrup flavoured soybean curd pudding. You can also have souvenir photographs with a pink-haired horse or with a big Saint Bernard breed dog but the best Baguio souvenir photograph activity is dressing on the native Igorot costumes while doing sorts of funny poses for the camera.

Flowers at Session Road.
It was afternoon already when the rain spoiled last day in Baguio. It made me realize that during summertime, we should visit places in the city starting early in the morning for us not to have spoiled rainy afternoon visits. Yet, me and my travel mates pursue on visiting Camp John Hay to discover other activities we can have while in Baguio. Since it was raining, we settled first in the camp’s Mile-Hi Center to eat at Mile-Hi Diner, a retro inspired restaurant serving American food fares like burgers, steaks and ribs. It occupies a 90 square meter space with al fresco dining area at Mile Hi Center of Camp John Hay. Mile-Hi Diner serves American/Mexican cuisine like Burger Steak, Tacos, Chili with Beans, Mexican Pizza, Buritos, Quesadillas, and Sizzling Fajitas. I tried their big serving of traditional American burger.

Pine Trees at Camp John Hay grounds.
The first trip of Summer 2013 is no better than spend of the summer capital - Baguio!
I wish to explore more of Camp John Hay’s attraction and pine forest trails that afternoon but it was still raining that I ended up exploring the The Manor with my travel mates. The Manor is a luxury hotel located inside Camp John Hay with its famed Le Chef restaurant that serves good food by renowned chef Billy King. Though I’m disappointed for the bad weather as it was still raining, the Panagbenga Festival flower float on display at Le Monet Hotel quite makes up for the disappointing weather where lots of Camp John Hay’s visitors are flocking for souvenir photos. Well, I was fascinated by the beautifully designed flower float used in the festival as it was really attractive. And we also took souvenir shots as well to have at least we feel the spirit of Panagbenga Festival.

The weather in Baguio is so good that we extend our stay from a few more hours to almost a day instead of leaving after an overnight stay. That’s how enthralling is Baguio for a summer vacation! My last few hours in Baguio are spend on watching a DVD movie marathon of local movies that I enjoyed with my travel mates. It was just perfect for enough relaxation and rest as we will embark on a long road trip again after. And when I was at the bus and it started moving, I went on pondering thoughts on how my first summer trip of the year was – lovely cool weather, ultimate adventure and superb bonding with best buddies! I think I need go back here again after this trip. My summertime visit here made me endear to Baguio once again.

Anilao Postcards: Of Seascapes... Of Sunsets... 3

The seascape view in front of my eyes starts to transform when the sun's reflections touches everything into golden hue. And the shadows of the running bancas, mountains and islands of Tingloy and Sombrero complemented this gorgeous scene of the moment. The clouds were starting to clear the horizon. The sun turns bolder and bigger as it starts to set down. And it was the start of the most beautiful moment of the day - Anilao Sunset.

Me and my travel mates on this Anilao day-off trip were still in the middle of chats and eating session when the sunset starts to show up. We were just tired from a whole noon of island hopping to nearby islands, coves and beaches of Anilao. We were tired but we enjoy the exploring the seascapes of Anilao.

The most beautiful moment of the day in Anilao...
The sunset just motivated me to practice my skills in capturing photos. One of my colleagues also starts to join me and coaches me in focusing the subject and using the lens since of my she brought a SLR camera. Then, we were joined by chats of my other travel mates. It was a good opportunity to share stories, to bond together and to enjoy the beauty of Anilao in front of us.

I can't get enough of this beautiful scenery in front of my eyes! I think I clicked countless times on my camera just to get perfect shots of Anilao Sunset. I can't count anymore how many times I snapped the click button! But I was satisfied whatever photo I've captured since the whole sunset moment was stunning, breathtaking and marvelous.

Sunset unfolding in the beach front.
Anilao Sunset.
Gorgeous!
I continue to took shots of the sunset while having a good conversation with my friends. The sky and sea is bath in golden yellow color. It was a gorgeous sunset and seascape scenery that I felt I become partially deaf for a moment while listening to my colleagues share of stories and chats. I’m always drawn to sunsets for its magnificence and loveliness. They are really best viewed by the sea!

Everything is reflected in golden sunshine.
After sunset... still admirable beauty of nature.
As the sun sets down and I also sat to watch it gone by. I reflect. It was the most beautiful moment of the day in Anilao. Three words - stunning, breathtaking and marvelous. I'm truly astonished to this moment of the day by the beach! It was an unforgettable seascape and admirable beauty of nature. Anilao Sunset made my day-off trip in Mabini, Batangas truly memorable!

A few more reflections after the sunset ends... This is one day-off that I won’t forget! Not only I did have a quick vacation on my day-off to destress and relax but also explore the beauty of Anilao. I also got to spend this “best day-off” with my best buddies and friends at work. Day-offs should be like this - stress-free, spend on a wonderful place, good share of stories, endless fun and great people to share this day-off with – that what makes the best day-off ever!

The end.

Anilao Postcards: Of Seascapes... Of Sunsets... 2

Pass four in the afternoon. The afternoon sun starts to low down yet its heat still radiates a bearable warm likened to a summer afternoon sun rays.  Though some of the clouds starts to cover up in the sky, the sun is clearly setting the scene by the vast seascape of Anilao. The sun says reflects a beautiful wash of light over the sea. The reflection of sun light creates a dramatic seascape that I only witnessed in Anilao.

I was carried away by the view of the beach front. I didn't noticed that my colleagues were keep on calling me to eat a late launch mixed early dinner. Though I still clicking on to take photographs, I gave in to their call to eat as I'm already hungry too like them. My travel mates slash work mates just came from a whole noon of island hopping around the seas of Anilao. We finished early noon so we failed to eat lunch but despite of it we still enjoyed the island hopping in Anilao to the fullest! The beauty of nature that we discover in the coves, beaches and islands of Anilao is something that me and friends will never forget.

Anilao's golden moment!
After satisfying my hunger, I return to clicking photographs again. It was then I realized that the setting of the sun is starting to change the color of the seascape into a golden sepia tone.

The sepia tone - experimenting using my point and shoot Samsung camera.
Dramatic Anilao Seascape.
Oh the sun!
The golden tone with a gorgeous sky and sun with the shadow of the islands and a mountain on the background made me feel astonish and marvel at the beach front scene of the rest house that we are staying. And when a banca passes through over the beautiful sunlight reflected sea, it made the seascape a stunning scene to behold.

Reflection of light.
Anilao Seascape like no other!
Golden moment - Bella! Bella! Bella!
I marvel at these beautiful seascapes of Anilao. They were worthy of postcards photos that we see in bookstores and souvenir shops. Photos that are good reminder how beautifully blessed our country with beauty of nature.

My friends at work on these trip were also enjoying these marvelous Anilao seascapes. And it was a pretty good moment to have chats with them - knowing them more deeply with their stories over a beautiful scenery in front of us. We even practiced how to take good shots of scene photographs. But few hours later, the seascapes in front of us starts to transform. It was time for the most beautiful moment of the day in Anilao to happen.

To be continue...

Undiscovered Sampaguita Beach of Bauan, Batangas

The last days of Summer is approaching. And I'm tempted to have one last summer escapade before the rainy season comes. Just a quick, short and nearby summer escape is all I need to quench my thirst for a one last summer trip.

The undiscovered Sampaguita Beach of Bauan in Batangas province.
It was timely when a friend of mine invited me to check out the beaches in Batangas for a summer trip. After online searches, we found Sampaguita Beach in Batangas with resorts located at the municipality of Bauan, which is just near to our province in Cavite. So we went off for a 2 hour trip to Bauan from Dasmarinas, Cavite. Upon arrival in Bauan, we took an Anilao bound jeepney and drop-off at Barangay Sampaguita which is just near the border between the municipality of Bauan and Mabini. From the drop-off, we took a tricycle that will take us to Barangay Sampaguita-Baba. There are two barangay of Sampaguita - Baba and Taas. Barangay Sampaguita-Baba is where the resorts of Sampaguita Beach are located. It is a 40-45 minute tricycle trip down to the mountainous and hilly terrain of the barangay. The end of the road is the jump point to the beach.

The road within a "forest" that one must past through before reaching Sampaguita Beach. 20-25 minutes from jeepney drop-off point.
The long shoreline of Sampaguita Beach has numerous beach resorts.  But we had a challenge - to reach the other resorts of Sampaguita Beach when the land entry point is block by a private resort. The second option is to cross the resort on a knee-deep water to reach the other side of the shore. Though the water is just knee-deep, our heavy things and packed food is making our cross difficult. So my friend devise a plan by pretending looking for rooms to stay and then excuse to come back when we wouldn't able to find rooms. It actually worked!

Residencia de Riego Beach and Dive Resort beach front.

The resort's accommodation - all-fan room nipa-hut style rooms.
After scouting for other resorts, we settled to Residencia de Riego Beach and Dive Resort which offered us affordable room package. It is also a very nice resort. Plus it has a beautiful beach front of Sampaguita Beach. Residencia de Riego Beach and Dive Resort is known for its signiture look of bamboo designed cottages and rooms and wide space grounds for music band performances. Bamboo trees also adorned every corner of the resort which invokes a feeling of tropical resort relaxation. But what I like the most about the resort is its good share of Sampaguita Beach shoreline that is gives a stunning seascape view from the front of the resort. They also offer snorkeling and island hopping activity. And unlike any other resort in Sampaguita Beach, only them offers diving activity to its guest.

The pristine Sampaguita Beach.
Violet cowrie shells at Sampaguita Beach.
Sampaguita Beach is a hidden charm of Bauan. It has an ivory-white sand beach with clean shoreline and pristine waters. The beach also has scenic seascapes of mountain ranges set against the blue-green waters of the beach. Also at the beach front, one can see the gorgeous seascape and its nearby islands of Anilao, Mabini and Tingloy. Those gorgeous sights added to the charming beauty of Sampaguita Beach.

The other side of the cove.
I coudn't resists its clear and clean blue-green waters so I swam to it under the midday sun. I think my break was just lunch time and by 4 in the afternoon I return to the beach again to swim again. It was a relaxing and calming swim under the summer sun. But how time flies fast that its time for me to witness the sunset of Sampaguita Beach. It was a momentous event of the day for me because it is the last sunset of Summer 2013. It was a beautiful golden Bauan Sunset that I will never forget! It was simply breathaking, stunning and marvelous. I watched its golden beauty and I'm glad to watch that sunset. And as it goes down, I watched until it faded in the faraway side of the sea up to until it faded in my eyesight. Witnessing that last sunset of summer is a great way to bid goodbye to summer season.

That night we had our packed dinner and a few booze of beer over sharing of stories. Unfortunately for those who are looking for a loud sounding nightlife in Sampaguita Beach, there is none to be found except doing a drinking session of beer or alcohol liquors over sharing of stories. Nightlife in Sampaguita Beach is mostly quiet, relaxing and tranquil to the body and soul.

Corals just a few meters from Sampaguita Beach. Perfect for snorkeling activity.
The following morning we did one last swimming in the morning at the beach. Though, I tempted to do snorkeling at the beach's coral garden reef or do island hopping activity since we still had enough time. I refuse to do so and instead choose to have a relaxing swim to the beach. I find it a calming and relaxing activity option to do in the morning. But in case visitors tries to do snorkeling, a coral garden is just near the beach where the resort's boat can fetch back and forth to the location of the coral reefs. For island hopping, one of the island itineraries is a visit to Sombrero Island, named after the shape of island which is a hat. Sombrero is the Tagalog term for hat.

Bauan Sunset - beautiful, beguiling, breathtaking...

Saying goodbye to the last sunset of Summer 2013...
Residencia de Riego  Beach and Dive Resort is a nice and affordable resort with friendly staff but the only drawback here is its location and how reach it from Bauan town proper. It's a challenge to reach it especially to commuters. But visitors can take the resort's private boat transfer arrangement service from Anilao port to Sampaguita Beach for an add-on fee on top of the room rate. But overall, its worth a try to stay in the resort and its location shouldn't let visitors refrain from visiting the resort. Plus Sampaguita Beach is truly a hidden charm in this side of Bauan.

Deep submerge.
Discovering and exploring Sampaguita Beach's beauty and charm was a great way for me to end my last summertime thirst for adventure. The Bauan sunset that I witnessed that day was perfect enough for me to say goodbye to summer. Though my last summer escapade experience is just quick and my stay at the resort is just short, I think I had the most of it with just discovering the undiscovered Sampaguita Beach of Bauan. Those great summer experiences made my summer a summer to remember.

Undiscovered Sampaguita Beach of Bauan, Batangas is my fourth and last trip of Summer 2013 that happened last May 29-30, 2013. I will soon have a separate post of photo gallery of Sampaguita Beach and Bauan seascapes that I captured during my visit last summer and an accommodation review of my stay in Residencia de Riego Beach and Dive Resort.

Anilao Postcards: Of Seascapes... Of Sunsets...

One of Anilao's best kept charm is probably its perfect postcard pictures of its seascapes and sunsets. My Anilao trip experience wouldn't be complete without seeing these sceneries of the sea, sun and sand. These sceneries made me relax from my stressful work life since it was my day-off when I visited Anilao and it let me appreciate the beauty of nature to the fullest! It calmed my mind and also made me realized that there is a time to take things at slow space without the rush and urgency. And what an enjoyable trip it was when it is shared with best trip buddies!

The stunnung Puting Buhok Cove upon our arrival from the outrigger boat.

Here are the "postcards" from Anilao which I took last November 2012:

Good morning Anilao!
Breaking dawn...
Morning Rainbow...
My morning started with me and my friends staring at the dawn view of the ocean. It was a very relaxing view to start your day watching the break of the dawn in front of you eyes as the beautiful seascape of Anilao starts unveil from the shadows into your eyes. It was a good morning in Anilao.

Rocky but stunning...
Later in the morning we were on a banca island hopping trip and found ourselves on a eye-pleasing treat of Anilao seascapes - complete with the surrounding islands, sea and sun! After a passing by some of the islands, we choose to stay in Puting Buhok Cove which greeted us with a gorgeous view of a white sand beach cove!

Puting Buhok Cove is not just laden with a long stretch of white sand beach but also has a picturesque landscape of rocks, lush vegetation and walled moutain-like peaks. It is also secluded and only few people visits it during our trip so we almost had the cove all by ourselves.

Puting Buhok Cove's seascape!
Paradise?
Own the beach for a moment in Puting Buhok Cove...

Even it was scorching hot under the sun, it didn't stop me and my travel mates to frolic in the sands, swim in the beach and bask under the sun in Puting Buhok Cove. We did beach photoshoots. We snorkeled in the nearby coral garden. And took time to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding around us. This is one of the best day-off I had!

Though, visiting the cove has a corresponding fee per person, I hope they do maintain the cove away from too much commercialism in the future. I like just the way it is - quiet, calm, clean, serene and surrounded by beautiful seascapes.

In the mood of Summer in November...
Sun. Sea. Sand... Experience Anilao like no other!
Snorkeling at Sombrero Island on our best day-off ever!
On our return, we saw nearby seascapes from Puting Buhok Cove. Pockets of white sand beaches, gorgeous rock formations and endless blue waters that soothes my eyesight was what all I see. We visited Sombrero Island, named after its shape but we only did snorkeling in the island and did not explore much about it as it has a corresponding fee to set foot on the island. But anyway, I enjoy snorkeling at Sombrero Island as the corals and marine animals in its waters were so alive and colorful!

We return to the port of the rest house where we are staying. It was around 2pm. We took a late lunch. But at around pass four in the afternoon, I witness yet another marvelous seascape of Anilao in my eyesight. It was beyond my imagination.

To be continue...
